Who is the municipal ombudsman?

A.M. Zwaneveld, LLM: ‘Contributing to the integrity of our government’

A.M. (Anne Mieke) Zwaneveld, LLM, has been the municipal ombudsman of Rotterdam and a number of other municipalities and municipal partnerships in the Rijnmond region since 1 March 2010.

Born in 1962, Ms Zwaneveld studied Dutch law at Erasmus University Rotterdam, from where she graduated in 1986. After completing judicial officer training, she took up the post of public prosecutor in Rotterdam in 1993. She was attached as a public prosecutor to the National Office of the Public Prosecution Service in 2004 and has been a vice president in the criminal law sector of the Rotterdam District Court since 2006.

Ms Zwaneveld holds the following additional positions:

  • Deputy justice of The Hague Court of Appeal (attendance fee)
  • Chair of the association of owner-occupiers of the apartment complex where she resides (unpaid)
  • Member of the board of the ‘Huis voor Klokkenluiders’ (House for Whistleblowers) (salaried)

As an ombudsman, Ms Zwaneveld wishes to make an active contribution to resolving complaints of citizens, companies and social organisations about the government. Her aim is to restore trust in the government through intermediation and by determining whether or not the government has acted properly.
